Manchester Women’s Aid offers five refuges across Manchester, providing emergency temporary housing for single women and women with children escaping domestic violence and abuse. Each refuge can accommodate up to 30 families in crisis. The refuges offer a safe environment, with self-contained units and communal homes available, and some units are fully accessible for disabled individuals.
Upon arrival, residents are assigned a support worker who assists in creating a personalized safety and support plan. Support services include emotional and mental health support, practical assistance with welfare benefits, accessing healthcare, childcare arrangements, education, training, and ongoing counseling. The ultimate goal is to help residents secure permanent, safe housing. Interpreters are available for those who do not speak English, and staff members speak various languages including Hindi, Punjabi, and Urdu.
Children are supported with dedicated playgroups, and residents are encouraged to participate in house meetings, coffee mornings, and support groups to enhance their experience in the refuge. Referrals can be made by self-referral or through statutory and voluntary agencies, ensuring access to support for those in need.
