Diagnostic Process
To initiate the diagnosis process, it is essential to schedule an appointment with your general practitioner (GP). During this visit, the GP will carefully assess your well-being, identify the primary source of distress, and evaluate the impact of these symptoms on your daily life. Additionally, they will conduct tests to rule out any potential physical ailments that might be contributing to these symptoms. They will also look at other mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety, as well as assessing that there is no immediate risk to your health and wellbeing.
After excluding any physical illness, the general practitioner (GP) will direct you to the community mental health team (CMHT) in order to schedule a psychiatric assessment.
Community Mental Health Team (CMHT)
A CMHT helps people with complex mental health conditions such as BPD. However, some teams may only focus on specific disorders and there may be alternative services which are better placed to help you.
Assessment
A specialist in personality disorders, typically a psychologist or psychiatrist, will likely conduct your assessment. The assessment will entail inquiries about your current struggles, your thoughts and emotions, your strengths and weaknesses, and your ability to cope with daily life. They will also ask about your mental health history, and whether you have had problems or treatments in the past.
After Diagnosis
After diagnosis, your specialist should advise what will happen next in terms of medication and therapy, and advise you of any waiting lists. They can also advise of any other support services in the area. They should also provide details of who to call in a crisis.
Once a diagnosis has been confirmed, it’s recommended you discuss it with close family and friends. Many of the symptoms of BPD affect your relationships, so involving them in your treatment may make them more aware of your condition and make treatment more effective.
They can also remain alert for any behaviours that may indicate you are having a crisis.
